Own a magnificent piece of Saint John history
When the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York visited Saint John in 1901, the decision where to house the Royal guests was a simple one. An article published at the time in the Saint John Globe states, “When the housing of the Royal Visitors was considered, naturally enough all minds interested thought of the palatial home, corner Mecklenburg and Sydney streets.”
The article explains that this home, known as Caverhill Hall, “is easily the finest residence in New Brunswick. If not, indeed, in the Maritime Provinces. Its broad corner windows, pillared balconies, battlement tower, and stone wall, beautifully-kept lawn, and trees, give it the appearance of some nobleman's seat in a land of nobility and titled people.”
The magnificent baronial-like castle was built between 1879 and 1881 for then Saint John mayor and businessman Simeon Jones after his former home was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1877. As it still does today, Caverhill Hall stood apart from other homes being built at the time by Saint John’s wealthy. Instead of the usual brick, Caverhill Hall was constructed of local lime stone with freestone trimmings and red and grey polished granite pillars.
If the walls of Caverhill Hall could talk, terrific stories would be told. Over the past 130 years, the impressive wood doors of this grand home have been opened to many. It has served as a single-family residence, a naval seaman’s mission during WW1, a health centre, a private air force club and a bar.
Caverhill Hall is once again a private residence with three additional rental apartments. Current owners have spent many years working on the restoration of this historically significant castle and it shows. While the property has modern plumbing and electrical, it retains the grandeur of its day.
Through the stained glass interior doors that lead into the owners’ quarters find an impressive formal foyer and grand staircase, many beautiful large rooms with 14 foot ceilings, detailed plaster mouldings, massive solid wood doors, wainscoting, hardwood flooring, stained glass windows, gorgeous wood-burning and propane fireplaces …
The main floor of the owners’ quarters boasts a stunning living room, dining room, music room and library. Find also a modern eat-in kitchen with maple cabinets, granite tops, a granite centre island with breakfast bar, lovely large windows, and a wood-burning fireplace. This floor has two bathrooms.
The second floor of this section has a large family room, while the next level is home to an office, a circular library with painted ceiling and skylight, four large bedrooms (some slept in by Royalty! ) and a large bathroom with centre jet tub, stand up shower, vanity, toilet, and closet.
A separate entrance leads to the three apartments. All apartments, two bachelor and a one-bedroom, have a full kitchens, full bathroom and many original architectural features.
